Speeches|

Esteemed Graduates, Illustrious Faculty, Distinguished Guests, University Council Chairman Amb. Sebunya Moses, Vice Chancellor Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa, Honored Chief Justice Owinyi Dolo, Beloved Attendees, and the Vanguard of Knowledge,
Today, we gather to celebrate not only the culmination of your academic journey but also honor the spirit of education and the pursuit of knowledge. As the Chancellor of the International University of East Africa (IUEA), it is a privilege and an honor to stand before you on this momentous day.

The theme for this year’s graduation, “Beyond Borders,” is a powerful reminder that knowledge knows no barriers. Our institution, renowned for innovation and academic excellence, embodies this principle at its core.
During my tenure as Chancellor, I had the privilege of writing a book that is a collection of my speeches the spanning length of my career. Most of what I did then and what I, in fact, continue to do as Chancellor of this great Institution reflects our Institution’s ethos as a beacon of knowledge and citadel of practice.

This year marks a historic milestone as I have the honour of being the first female Chancellor in Uganda. As a lawyer, I understand the transformative power of education. It shapes individuals and societies. It shaped me from beginnings that were humble and challenging to Chancellor of IUEA and everything else in between. Knowledge breaks barriers, fosters global citizenship, improves well-being and constructs communities.

To all the graduates, you stand on the precipice of a future filled with possibilities. Armed with the knowledge you’ve acquired, experiences you’ve lived, and guidance of your esteemed faculty, you have been prepared to venture into a world that eagerly awaits your contribution. Today’s world is more interconnected and interdependent than ever before. It requires individuals like you, equipped with knowledge, and more importantly with the ability and attitude to adapt and innovate.

As you step out of this institution, remember that the quest for knowledge doesn’t end here. It’s a lifelong journey. The education you’ve received is a solid foundation, a launchpad from which you can soar to great heights. Stay curious, keep learning, and remain open to new ideas, places and experiences.

Being the first female Chancellor of this esteemed institution and the first female vice chancellor in Uganda fills me with profound pride, joy and sense of great societal achievement. It’s a testament to the progress we’ve made in breaking down gender barriers and promoting equality in education and leadership. I stand here as a representative of all the young girls and women aspiring to make a difference in the world. I urge each one of you, irrespective of gender, to pursue your dreams with determination and resilience.

In my capacity as a lawyer, I understand the power of justice and its role in society. The legal profession is about upholding justice, being a voice for the voiceless, and ensuring a fair and equitable society. For those of you graduating in law, it is a noble path that you’ve chosen. Be ethical and compassionate legal professionals, striving for justice and truth in all your endeavors.

This year, we’ve been granted a charter for the International University of East Africa, signed by H.E. Hon. Yoweri Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda. This is a significant milestone, highlighting our commitment to academic excellence and the recognition of our contributions to the academic landscape. This charter symbolizes our dedication to providing quality education and fostering a culture of research, innovation, and global collaboration. It lays the foundation for a future where we envision our university playing a pivotal role in shaping a borderless world, where knowledge transcends boundaries and where our graduates become global citizens, equipped to face and address the challenges of an interconnected world.

As you stand at the threshold of this new chapter in your lives, I encourage you to embrace this vision of a borderless world. Our world today is facing multifaceted challenges that require collective efforts, transcending geographical and disciplinary borders. The skills you have honed and the knowledge you have gained during your time at IUEA have prepared you to be part of this global community. You have the capacity to contribute, to collaborate, and to lead on the world stage.

Our vision is one where you, our graduates, will bridge divides, foster understanding, and drive positive change. It is a vision where you will leverage your expertise and passion to create a world that is more equitable, diverse, sustainable, inclusive and just. Remember, you are not just recipients of knowledge; you are now bearers of the torch of enlightenment, and it’s your responsibility to carry this light wherever you go. As stated by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie “The world is a better place when we act from the authenticity of who we are”.

In conclusion, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of you. You have worked hard, persevered, and now stand as a testament to what education, determination, resilience and a great Institution can achieve. As you step into the world, armed with your degrees and the values instilled in you by this esteemed institution, know that you carry with you the hopes and dreams of many. Be women and men of excellence.

Go forth, our dear graduates, and make your mark in this world. Be the change-makers, the innovators, and the leaders we know you can be. Embrace the borderless world with open arms, for it is within this expansive realm that you will find and realize your true potential.

Thank you.
